ACK!! Colorado Author Connie Willis has more Hugo awards than any other living writer (Doomsday Book and To Say Nothing of the Dog among them)... I recommend Bellwether which you can find anywhere in paperback is a nice rainy day read.. laugh till you throw up.. it is about Boulder. I would have added Vernor Vinge for Sci Fi.. Across Realtime, A Fire Upon the Deep (Hugo) and A Deepness in the Sky (Hugo) make him a powerhouse... Greg Bear and David Brin for sentimental reasons. There is a Brit named Peter F Hamilton that writes like words from an angel and will scare the hell out of you (Reality Dysfunction, Fallen Dragon and Pandoras Star are just amazing)... And finally Jack McDevitt... if you only ever read one more sci fi novel.. please make it "Engines of God"... you will buy every book this guy ever wrote to thank him for it.
I am VERY pleased though to find a very plausable first place finisher among the sci fi writers on the list. Dan Simmons. Writer of Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion as well as last years "ILIUM" (can you say third HUGO?) and this falls release "Olympos" (probably back to back HUGOs again for Dan) A Colorado writer Dan is approachable and a wonderful speaker if you have the chance to hear him do a reading or sign his various books. Please do not ignore his horror fiction (Song of Kali, Carrion Comfort, Summer of Night) as they are also of top quality. VOTE FOR DAN!!!!!
