Another year and another con under my belt...damn am I tired
Ok..So I survived another convention even if it was slightly less hectic than others I attend over the course of a year. This year there were wonderful panel discussion groups for almost anyone interested in writing about science fiction or fantasy. Also this year the Hugo award winning author Alan Dean Foster was in attendance, letting us all hear about his newest book, who turned out to be a likeable man who took time to speak to folks that asked him questions. I enjoyed the ghost stories of hotels throughout the west and southwest. The costume contest was fun as well, folks with great imaginations and I dare say, a wonderful talent for sewing and construction showed us all that they had to offer Saturday evening, with the Toy Story green army men took best in show this year and believe me it was well earned, but the costumes didn’t end at the masquerade ball. I saw a great deal appear in the bar later with fantasy and science fiction themes drinking in harmony and believe me there is no better crowd to drink with than a bunch of Klingons. I also found it a thrill while others did not, that kids of all ages were attending the con this year with their parents. I easily see the next generation of readers and writers of Sci-Fi and Fantasy in most of them. I believe that a lot of what we read about now will not be so far into the future so you have to wonder what this young, budding, authors will write about in twenty years or so? In conclusion I hope more and more folks attend this enlightening convention where fans and authors gather together with a common interest and next year the place to be will be the Hyatt near the tech center in Denver so make plans early to come and learn something new or even remember something old and we here at SCIFIPUNDIT look forward to meeting you at our con suite we hope to have next year.

MileHi Writers Convention this Weekend in Denver
Huzzah! MileHi 37 Convention starts next Friday, Oct 21st in Denver, CO. There will be some wonderful science fiction and fantasy writers in attendence for the 3-day convention, as well as some informative panels led by those authors on who, what, and when to write in the sci fi and fantasy worlds; as well as some great panels on other things revolving around science and Sci-Fi / Fantasy. I love this con, being a some time writer myself and enjoying the adventure when I am able to. I also love seeing the great costumes that show up at con. I think a big part of the fun is seeing what sort of imaginations folks have, be it good or bad. And let us not forget the friends I get to see again, with some being from the ren faire and others from Star Fest, Barbarians, Klingons and a few super heros... oh my. The authors get a kick out of it too if last year was an clue, as they finally get to meet some of the fans who wait patiently for months and sometimes years on end for a new book to arrive at their favorite bookstore before spending a few dollars on a new journey with their favorite characters or some new ones someone dreamed up. Also there is the con suites where folks of different fan clubs feed you and encourage your participation in whatever they have going so they can find new members to join them. And last and certainly not least is the pub, where folks and fans and friends can gather to have a few beers and discuss/argue about what they love most...science fiction and fantasy. So in closing, please come out next weekend to the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Denver and have some fun and adventure and meet some really good people. So you know, SCIFIPUNDIT will be out there too and maybe we can get some interviews if at all possible with some authors or fans. Hope to see you there.

The voting continues...do you believe in ghosts? Don't forget to share you opinion.
If you haven't seen Serenity yet, go! If you have already seen it, go again! Box Office Mojo says Serenity has made over $19M since it opened on September 30th. I understand it took over $40M to make the movie. I, for one, would like to see this continue and grow. Get out and show your support.

Blog it and they will come?
In the past we have written about making video/computer games into movies. Halo won hands down in our July blog poll for the game our readers most wanted to see made into a movie. Well, now it seems that is going to happen. Alex sent me this article last night. Peter Jackson of The Lord of the Rings fame will be the executive producer. All things considered, I believe Mr. Jackson to be a good choice as I envision a Halo movie to filled with huge landscape shots. Mr. Jackson, may the Master Chief be with you.
Tis the season...
It's October and the frost is on the pumpkin. And that can only mean one thing...Halloween. And Halloween naturally makes us think of the supernatural. In that "spirit", this month's SCIFIPUNDIT poll is brief and to the point. As always, it's between the links and the ads on the right side of the page. Vote, enjoy.

And now, something completely different...
Robert found this review written by someone that has never seen the Firefly TV series. It definitely presents a very interesting prospective. All of us here at SCIFIPUNDIT love and have seen the complete TV series, so perhaps our opinions are a bit skewed. In a world with no original Star Trek movies or shows to watch, maybe we will take whatever we can get. And suddenly there is so much to choose from. Still (and some of you may want to sit down first) I CAN live in world without Star Trek. How? Why? What? Well let me tell you; I can live happily in this new world because of Firefly, Battlestar and Stargate.

"Serenity" fills the void for the fans
The theater Friday night was packed with fans, both new and old, including our small group that attended. I almost couldn't tell the difference between the fan bases. Some of the old fans of the original series wore their T-shirts with different words scripted in Chinese that read Joss is Boss to troublemaker and with the end of the movie came applause from the crowd that seemed to show Serenity lived up to the hype. So far all my friends love this movie. Joss has another hit on his hands even if the series did not fare well on the Fox network. I am hoping to see a sequel down the road and from what I have read, so does Joss Whedon. The characters all worked well together even after a four-year absence from the Firefly sets I could still see the wonderful comradery between the actors. As I said in a previous post the humor and action mixed so well together. Joss has a talent for bringing the two together and showing sides of characters you need to know to make a story work. The one liners from almost every member of the crew had me rolling with laughter at times, while the action sequences kept me on the edge of my seat. I am sure that those who see this fun movie over the upcoming weeks will agree that it was worth seeing. And dare I say worth buying in a few months when it hits DVD we give it 4 out of 5 aliens. So spend your $7.50 and see it, then go back and watch the series on the SCIFI channel I am hoping my fellow author, Cheryl will post her thoughts on the movie (Hint, Hint)
