So this is Blogging? I set up this site for fans, enthusiasts and anyone else interested in Sci-Fi so that they may discuss their hopes, dreams, and wishes for what's to come in the universe of Science Fiction, Paranormal or Fantasy.

Short and sweet

Enjoy! Special thanks to Alex's friend David for sending this lovely little ode to Jean-Luc! You can meet David in person as he plays Prince James at the Colorado Renaissance Festival. Thanks, David!

Wanna buy five copies for my mother

It’s not the cover, but it will do. The latest Rolling Stone Magazine features an article about none other than Battlestar Galactica.

What I found to be most interesting was that both Ron Moore and David Eick were political science majors. Go figure… This article also helped me to realize that it is because the show is on the Sci Fi Channel, they are able to be a bit more edgier because as Ron Moore says “…in sci-fi, they don't notice or care so much -- you get a free pass." However, this article leaves me asking if BSG is so impressive why it doesn’t receive more mainstream recognition? The Golden Globes were all over the show Lost, why not BSG? Maybe we want it this way. The alternative is a show far less willing to explore so many prickly topics. If BSG were on NBC, would we get the same show? Doubtful. I, for one, will keep paying for cable so I may enjoy a science fiction series with meaning and relevance. Please enjoy the article here.

Three things I am thankful for

1. Her name WASN'T Cassiopeia.
2. They didn't call her a socialator.
3. Lee didn't give Paya a dagget.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Political Issues and Science Fiction Perspectives Of Such

So the question here is: How many political issues can writers put into B.S.G ? I believe I counted four this last episode - five if you count cloning like the Cylons do. The first is Breast Cancer Awareness with the President of the colonies dying from the second leading killer of women. The second political issue being Terrorism with the sabotage and bombing of space craft and the taking of lives be they military or civilian. I think the speech that the female bomber made before she blew a hole in the side of one of the ships is almost word for word what a Iraqi bomber said on a tape she left for TV. The third being poor quality of the school systems and the low pay of teachers, that even in the future still seems to be a problem that can’t be resolved. And forth, I think is that of a play on stem cell research involving a cure for cancer from the blood of a half Cylon fetus belonging to Halo and Boomer. I think Ron Moore and David Eicks have seemed to find issues near to fans hearts be they good or bad and I love that idea. I think the story lines give fans a point of reference from their own present time lines. I doubt any of the writers or producers read this but if anyone knows them please pass along our thanks from SCIFIPUNDIT for keeping folks and fans alike, aware of these issues.

I Can't Leave Cheryl Alone With The Blog

So I leave Cheryl alone with the blog for a few weeks and she goes crazy with Denver Bronco colored aliens! I will need to keep a closer eye on her in the future, and sorry to any Steeler fans out there who had to endure that picture. Although my beautiful wife enjoyed it a lot.

I have started back to college so I have plenty to write already, but I will make sure I do better about posting here in the coming months. Now on to some news: The One Ring Convention in Pasadena was held this weekend for those of you who, like me are Lord Of The Rings fans. Also the 40th anniversary of Star Trek is being celebrated in a few cities around the country this year. Chicago, New York, Sacramento and Las Vegas are playing host to this huge event. I also know there is a BSG convention coming up as well in Burbank, CA in August 2006. Personally I would love to attend each and every one of these cons but money doesn’t fall out of shuttle crafts or Vipers for that matter, so I will be very content with our Science Fiction conventions here such as Star Fest and Opus which I hope come soon because I am going through con withdrawal and driving my wife crazy, not to mention some of my close friends. Any of you that have not had the great pleasure of attending cons such as those listed should try to make an attempt to do so. It is a great place to make new friends and find folks with common interests that rival your own. We here at SCIFIPUNDIT love hearing comments and concerns and even rumors about the scifi world so please write us and let us know.

Now all I have to say is GO STEE... Broncos (My lovely wife is watching so I had to say it..)

January Poll

We finally have a poll for January. After brainstorming, Toni and I decide this would be the perfect poll during this time of football fever.

Cheer, decide, vote! Make it so.

Stone Cold Shatner

Have you heard the latest? William Shatner's kidney stone he passed last year was sold for charity to the tune of $25,000.00. I have to admit having such an item would be impressive. The lucky buyer is GoldenPalace.com. This is the same folks that pay individuals to have GoldenPalace.com tattooed on his/her person. You can read more about it here. And while you are at it, go have a look at all the cool things Golden Palace has acquired.

The big build up

I finally saw the last episode of BSG in its entirety last night. I can’t help but feel we are being lead into a very exciting climax at the end of the season. There are lots of seeds of doubt and intrigue being planted. For example, why does Lee want to die? Where did Gina go once she killed the Admiral? Will we see her again? What IS Gaius doing? Does he too have a plan or is this simply his sanity coming out to play? Will the president be saved by some new medical procedure? This show still continues to excite and thrill. I don’t see any signs of that stopping. This is, in fact, a good thing.

And then...I had a thought about the Cylons’ monotheism. What if their “god” is nothing more than a Lore like figure. You remember Lore from STNG, don’t you? Perhaps this being or god is just a Cylon with a major malfunction that has manifested itself in the form of a God Complex. Or it could be a human too, not unlike Baltar in the original BSG. The Cylons have not been heard from for a long time. There was plenty of opportunity for someone or something to step in and rise up as the savior of that race. FYI, I didn’t read this in a spoiler. It was just a passing thought. I wonder if I’m right…

My always lovely and delightful friend, Liz (and devoted SCIFIPUNDIT reader), sent this entertaining picture. Turns out this artist has done quite a few scifi related cartoons. Check it out here.

Do we dare?

Ok, we all know I love Star Trek, always have and always will. This is nothing new. However....dare we hope, dare I hope? I found an interesting tibbit over on Sci Fi Wire. It seems rumors are flying about a new Star Trek movie. I think this is just one of those things one has to see to believe. But I just can't help but have a small morsel of hope. Read it here folks. And join me in a little finger crossing.

In case you've ever wondered, we here at SCIFIPUNDIT do occasionally get dressed up. I think we clean up very nicely despite the rumors to the contrary.
In the first picture, you will find (left to right) Alex, Toni, Cheryl and Robert.
In the next, SCIFIPUNDIT at its New Year's Best.

WOW!

Let me just be clear on this...WOW!

I have to hand it to the Sci Fi Channel. They seem to be onto something. Both Gates and BSG were pretty darn good. Especially BSG, has there been a bad episode? No. Who knew Ensign Roe would make such a kick ass Admiral. Or at least the kind of Admiral whose ass you want to kick. And this resurrection ship…looks like we are going to have plenty of chances to explore the Cylon religion. I am particularly interested in seeing where Mr. Moore and Mr. Eick are going with the whole monotheism versus polytheism matter.

Now, we all have to wait one more week to see what happens next…at least we don’t have to wait another 6 months. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Friday is off my social and shopping calendar for the next few months. I’ll be in front of a TV enjoying the likes of Ori, Wraiths and hopefully some cute MALE Cylons. Hey, it never hurts to ask, now does it?
